Glen Eira Council suspends paid parking for 12 months
Following the recent Glen Eira Council Ordinary Meeting, Council has confirmed its next steps on parking management across key activity centres, including Elsternwick Village.
The outcome represents a clear shift away from the immediate introduction of paid parking and reflects the strong feedback received from local traders, residents, and visitors.
What Council has confirmed
At the meeting, Council resolved to:
-
Implement smart parking sensors in Bentleigh, Carnegie, and Elsternwick activity centres
-
Undertake a 12-month review of sensor data, with transparent reporting back to Council
-
Confirm that no paid parking will be introduced during this 12-month review period
-
Use sensor data to support more timely and efficient parking enforcement
-
Introduce a voluntary, opt-in app to provide real-time parking availability information
-
Support greater consistency in parking limits, including aligning or extending existing restrictions into evenings and weekends where possible
-
Acknowledge the extensive community feedback received during the engagement process
A community-driven outcome
This result did not happen by accident. The volume of feedback, grassroots advocacy, and coordinated community action played a critical role in shaping Council’s approach.
Local traders, residents, and supporters made their views clear, and Council has acknowledged that engagement in its decision-making.
What happens next
Over the next 12 months, Council will collect and review parking data and provide updates as findings emerge. Elsternwick Village Management will continue to monitor developments closely and keep the community informed as more detail becomes available.
Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak up and get involved.
