Vision Statement
The Elsternwick Mainstreet Committee, working in conjunction with Glen Eira City Council, is responsible for the overall marketing of the Elsternwick shopping strip utilising funds provided via a special rate levy.
The Elsternwick Mainstreet Committee's vision for Elsternwick is to:
Develop the Elsternwick shopping strip as the most prosperous and vibrant shopping precinct
in the City of Glen Eira.
The vision is for a shopping strip that:
- has a unique and distinctive sense of brand identity
- is vibrant, prosperous, friendly and relaxed
- maintains a strong heritage feel
- has an interesting mix of shops
- has a wide range of business and service providers
- attracts and supports new businesses and appropriate development
- has attractive public spaces and community facilities
- has an active committee working for the interests of the shopping strip as a whole
The Elsternwick Mainstreet Committee will support the vision by:
- raising the profile of the businesses through interesting and innovative marketing activities
- facilitating a safe and attractive environment within the shopping strip
- creating specific events and promotions to stimulate trade and raise awareness
- encouraging individual businesses to be creative with visual merchandising
- stimulating business development by providing access to retail experts and professional speakers
- fostering a sense of pride in all businesses to enhance the overall appearance of the shopping strip
- providing networking and marketing opportunities for traders
Elsternwick Mainstreet Charter of Membership
Each business owner agrees to work in conjunction with the Elsternwick Mainstreet Committee to align their business with the principles of the vision for the Elsternwick shopping strip.
To achieve this individual businesses agree to:
- maintain a high standard of presentation in all aspects of the business including premises and staff
- ensure the visual appearance of both the internal and external areas, including footpath, reflects and attitude of pride in their business and in the community generally
- create a welcoming and professional first impression for customers through ensuring spaces are kept clean and uncluttered
- ensure that staff are well trained and provide excellent customer service at all times
- use creative visual merchandising and displays to provide an interesting and vibrant environment for shoppers
Elsternwick Mainstreet Committee Marketing Outline
In any year the Mainstreet Committee will invest resources in a combination of the following activities:
Advertising
Design and place monthly full page advertising features in local newspapers, including Caulfield Glen Eira Leader, Bayside Leader and Stonnington Leader, marketing the street as a shopping destination, themed for special events:
- Mothers Day, Fathers Day and Christmas
- January and June sales
- Spring fashion
- Tastes of Elsternwick and Business Excellence Awards
- Produce and distribute (either via letterbox drop or as an insert in the Leader newspaper) up to 40,000 specific advertising brochures and catalogues at:
- Christmas
- Tastes of Elsternwick
- on occasion for fashion events
- Create and distribute business directories
Marketing
- Develop and maintain www.elsternwick.com website which acts as an online business directory for all businesses in the Elsternwick shopping strip.
- Organise shoppers competitions to attract and reward our customers
Events and Functions
- Develop and implement the inaugural Elsternwick Business Excellence Awards program
- Coordinate the annual Tastes of Elsternwick food event a regular event since 2005
- Organise various fashion events
Seminars, Training and Education
Business development initiatives ie provided professional speakers on relevant topics:
- visual merchandising
- marketing
- website development
- Fund numerous places at business events and seminars organised by Glen Eira City Council
Environmental Projects
- Fund weekly cardboard collection which is accessed by most businesses in the street, delivering a direct cost saving
- Fund graffiti removal from all buildings and public furniture in the area
- Distribute of Elsternwick reusable shopping bags
- Streetscape
Purchase, maintain and install along the strip:
- Sets of unique themed lighting features on specific shop awnings four different times of the year
- Christmas garlands for the tram wire spans
- Maintain Street Banners
- Maintain tram poles within the precinct
Liaison and Lobby
Make representation to Glen Eira City Council on local issues including:
- street maintenance and hygiene
- garden beds
- rubbish bins
- planning, parking, development, and local laws
- Footpath Trading Policy
- public toilet
- overall condition of the Elsternwick Plaza adjacent to railway station
- Liaise with police representatives on local crime issues
Communication and Networking
- Create networking events bringing businesses together
- Distribute bi-monthly newsletter t
- keep businesses informed of activities and projects
- Liaise with fellow business owners, share relevant information and assist in problem solving on a range of issues, including leasing
- Develop relevant social networking opportunities
Special Projects
- For example market research
- Shopfront improvement programs
Mainstreet Coordinator
Employ a professional and enthusiastic Centre Coordinator to facilitate all of the above
